‘It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see’-Henry Thoreau
‘No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist’-Oscar Wilde
Welcome to my website-
I am Katherine Sutherland and currently live and work in the Highlands of Scotland where I am fascinated by and grateful for the seemingly endless visual inspiration I receive everyday on my doorstep.
I like to use direct simple brushstrokes in my painting and use exciting colour palettes in order to produce ‘truthful paintings’ which really get to the heart or essence of a place and how I respond to it emotionally. I try not to be afraid of failure ,try to keep paintings simple and to stick with good ideas and know that it doesn’t always have to make sense. I enjoy not restricting myself to one medium and like to be inspired by other artists, photographers and designers and believe that cross-pollination can make very interesting outcomes.
My paintings are greatly influenced by the Scottish Colourists 1900-1930, Tom Thomson, Duncan Shanks, David Bomberg and Peter Prendergast. I admire their use of strong brushwork, strong composition along with a great personal reverence of nature.
From studying their work I have learned a great deal about the depiction of light and the harmonious and balanced use of colour and have tried to use their methods of seeing and using colour in my own work.
